TikTok Became Gen Z’s Relationship Counselor. Is That Helping or Hurting?

by | Oct 21, 2026

Love bombing. Gaslighting. Breadcrumbing. Situationship. Red flags, beige flags, green flags. A few years ago, most people had never heard half these words. Now teenagers use them before their first date.

Researchers are paying attention. A 2026 university thesis studying TikTok’s effect on modern romance found that viral trends and slogans noticeably shape how people talk and think about relationships. News outlets have started calling TikTok Gen Z’s unofficial “relationship counselor,” spreading a whole vocabulary of love and warning signs in short videos.

What TikTok gets right

I’ll give credit where it’s due. Young people today can name unhealthy behavior faster than my generation could. A girl who knows what love bombing is might recognize it before she’s in too deep. Digital media experts have pointed out that these videos have raised awareness of emotional well-being and unhealthy patterns. That’s a good thing.

Where it goes wrong

Instant diagnosis. One bad text and he’s a “narcissist.” One forgotten plan and she’s “toxic.” Real labels are being used for normal human mistakes, and real abuse can get lost in the noise.

Comparison and anxiety. Research on short-form video suggests that constant relationship content can increase social comparison and anxiety. If every couple online is either perfect or a horror story, your normal relationship can start to feel wrong.

Advice with no context. A 60-second video doesn’t know your history, your culture, or the person sitting across from you. Some of the loudest relationship “experts” online are selling something.

How to use it wisely

  • Use TikTok words to start a conversation, not end one.
  • Ask “Is this a pattern, or a moment?” before you slap on a label.
  • Notice who’s giving the advice and what they’re selling.
  • When it really matters, talk to a real person: a friend, a pastor, a coach, or a therapist.

TikTok can teach you the vocabulary. It can’t do the work of loving well. That part is still up to us.
