You make money as a life coach by charging for coaching (single sessions, multi-week packages, on-demand calls and group programs), and by getting seen by enough of the right people that those sessions fill up. Most coaches who struggle aren’t bad coaches. They’re invisible. The coaching part they learned in certification. The getting-seen part nobody taught them.
I’m going to be straight with you, coach to coach, because I’ve watched too many good people quit this work before their first year was out.
How much do life coaches actually make?
Coaching is a real business, and it’s growing. The International Coaching Federation’s 2025 Global Coaching Study counted 122,974 coach practitioners worldwide, bringing in an estimated $5.34 billion a year. Do the math on those two numbers and it works out to roughly $43,000 per coach, on average.
That average hides a wide spread. Some coaches are building six figures. Many are part-time, coaching around a job or a family, and earning far less. What separates them is rarely talent. It’s whether they set up more than one way to get paid, and whether people can find them.
What are the main ways life coaches get paid?
Here’s what actually brings in money, roughly from fastest to slowest to start:
- On-demand calls. Someone is hurting tonight and wants to talk now, not book two weeks out. You get paid by the session or by the minute, with no package to sell. It’s the fastest first dollar most new coaches can earn.
- Single paid sessions. One focused hour for one problem. Easy for a client to say yes to, and often the doorway to a package.
- Coaching packages. A set number of sessions over 8 to 12 weeks, paid upfront or monthly. This is where steady income comes from, because you’re not starting from zero every week.
- Group coaching and classes. One hour of your time, several paying people in the room. Great once you have a following.
- Books, workbooks and digital products. They earn while you sleep, but only after people already know your name.
- Speaking and workplace coaching. The ICF study found that most coaching clients are sponsored by their employers, so companies are a real market once you have credibility.
You don’t need all six. You need two that feed each other: something fast, like on-demand calls or single sessions, and something steady, like packages.
Where do life coaches find clients?
Clients find coaches they’ve already seen and already trust. So the question isn’t really “where are my clients.” It’s “where can people see me help someone before they ever pay me?”
- Coach directories. People searching “find a life coach” are ready to hire. A complete profile with a photo, your niche and a booking link puts you in front of them. You can list your practice free as a Rising Coach on Life Coaching Today.
- Getting published. An article with your name, your photo and a link back to you does more for trust than any ad. Our Write For Us program publishes coaches every month in our magazine, blog and partner sites, and the leads go straight to you.
- Short video. Three minutes of you answering one real question shows people how you think. That’s what makes a stranger book a call.
- Podcasts. Being a guest on someone else’s show borrows their audience’s trust.
- Referrals. Every happy client knows someone going through the same thing. Ask them. Most coaches never do.
The pattern I see over and over
A coach finishes her certification, full of fire. Then she spends six months on a logo, a website and a perfect bio. She tells herself she’ll start once everything looks right. Nobody books, because nobody knows she exists. By month eight she’s wondering if she wasted her money.
The coaches who make it do the opposite. They pick one problem they’re great at helping with. They get in front of people right away, imperfect and all. They take paid calls before the website is finished. Their first clients come from being seen, not from being polished.
What should you charge?
Charge for the result, not the hour. Someone trying to save a marriage or survive a breakup isn’t buying 60 minutes. They’re buying their peace back.
Start with a price you can say out loud without flinching, then raise it as your calendar fills. Offer an upfront option with a real discount, because cash in hand matters when you’re building. And never give away a free session without a clear next step at the end of it.
The mistakes that keep good coaches broke
- Waiting until everything is perfect. Perfect is just fear in a nice outfit.
- Coaching “everyone.” When you help everyone, no one feels like you’re talking to them.
- Only one way to get paid. One slow month and you panic.
- Staying invisible. If people can’t find you, your gift can’t help them.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a full-time living as a life coach?
Yes, but most coaches don’t start there. It usually takes steady visibility, a clear niche and more than one way to get paid. Many coaches build part-time first and go full-time once packages carry the bills.
Do you need a certification to get paid as a life coach?
In most of the United States, life coaching doesn’t require a license. A certification still helps clients trust you, and it gives you real tools. What clients care about most is whether you can help with their problem.
How long does it take to get your first paying client?
It depends almost entirely on how fast you get in front of people. Coaches who take paid on-demand calls, publish and show up on video often get paid within weeks. Coaches who wait for a perfect website can wait months.
Where can new life coaches find clients for free?
A free directory listing, short videos, guest spots on podcasts, helpful posts in Facebook groups, and asking every past client for one referral. Life Coaching Today’s Rising Coach listing is free to join.
Is the life coaching market too crowded?
No. The ICF study shows the number of coaches and the money spent on coaching both growing. Crowded only matters if you sound like everyone else. A clear niche and your real voice set you apart.
