If you’ve been on TikTok this month, you’ve probably seen it. The “Stop the Wedding” trend has people looking back at their wedding day with the gift of hindsight: the dress they’d never wear again, the cake that cost a car payment, the bridesmaid they don’t speak to anymore. Some of it is hilarious.
And some of it isn’t about the cake at all.
The joke underneath the joke
Scroll long enough and you’ll find a quieter version: people saying, half laughing, that they would stop the whole wedding. They knew something was off. They had a feeling at the altar. Everyone said it was just nerves.
That’s what makes this trend worth talking about. Humor is how a lot of us admit hard truths. It’s easier to say “I should’ve run” over a funny sound than to say it out loud to a friend.
What hindsight is really telling us
In my years of coaching and mediation, I’ve heard so many people say some version of: “I knew before I said yes.” The red flags weren’t hidden. They were explained away.
- “He’ll change after we’re married.”
- “Everyone has cold feet.”
- “We already paid the deposit.”
- “What would people think if I called it off?”
A deposit is not a reason to marry someone. Neither is embarrassment.
If you’re engaged right now
Pay attention to the feeling you keep pushing down. Ask yourself: would I marry this person if there were no wedding, no guests, and no money already spent? If the answer is a clear yes, wonderful. If the answer makes your stomach drop, talk to someone you trust, or a coach, before the big day, not after.
If you’re already married and laughing a little too hard
You’re not stuck with a laugh-cry forever. Some marriages can be rebuilt with honest work. Some can’t. Either way, you deserve to stop joking about it and start dealing with it.
You don’t have to figure this out alone
