World Mental Health Day came and went on October 10. The theme the World Federation for Mental Health chose for 2026 was “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.” The idea is simple: the people who have lived through depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, and crisis should be heard, and what they say should shape the help that’s offered.
I love that theme, because it’s what good coaching and good therapy already know. You are the expert on your own life.
Why your story matters
For a long time, mental health was something people whispered about. Families kept it quiet. Churches prayed over it but didn’t talk about it. Men were told to tough it out. Women were called dramatic.
When people tell the truth about what they’ve been through, three things happen:
- Someone else realizes they’re not the only one.
- The shame gets smaller, because shame needs silence to survive.
- Helpers learn what actually works, not just what looks good on paper.
Your voice doesn’t have to be public to count
You don’t have to post your story online. Real voices can be quiet ones: telling your doctor the truth about how you’ve been sleeping, telling your partner what you need, or telling a friend, “I’m not okay.”
October is also Depression Awareness Month in the U.S., and free, anonymous mental health screenings are available at mhascreening.org. It takes a few minutes and can help you put words to what you’ve been feeling.
Coaching and therapy work together
A coach can help you set goals, build routines, and move forward. A licensed therapist treats mental health conditions. Many people benefit from both, and Life Coaching Today lists coaches, therapists, and hypnotherapists so you can find the right fit.
If you’re in crisis or thinking about hurting yourself, please call or text 988 right now. You matter.
You don’t have to figure this out alone
