Last week, Newsweek ran an interview with a 30-year-old man who once embraced red pill culture and walked away from it. He described leaving as a gradual process of questioning. Not a lightning bolt. Not one argument he lost. Just one doubt, then another, until the whole thing stopped making sense.
I want to talk about that, man to man, because it’s how almost every man I know who got out describes it.
Why men get in
Let’s be honest about why the manosphere works. It finds men when they’re hurting: after a breakup, a layoff, a rejection, or years of feeling invisible. It offers three things every man wants: an explanation, a plan, and a brotherhood.
The explanation is that women are the problem. The plan is to lift, earn, and “stop simping.” The brotherhood is a crowd of other angry men who finally make you feel understood.
Some of the advice is even good. Get in shape. Take care of your money. Have standards. That’s the hook. The poison comes with it: contempt for women, distrust of everyone, and the idea that love is a war you either win or lose.
The questions that get men out
- “Why am I angrier than when I started?” If something is helping you, you should feel better, not more bitter.
- “Who’s making money off my pain?” Courses, coaching packages, supplements, subscriptions. Follow the money.
- “Does this match the women I actually know?” Your mother. Your sister. Your daughter. The good woman who treated you well.
- “Am I closer to love or further from it?” That one cuts deep.
What replaces it
Men who leave don’t just need to quit something; they need something to replace it. Real friends who’ll tell you the truth. A purpose bigger than winning arguments online. Counseling or coaching that helps you heal what sent you looking in the first place. And the courage to be vulnerable with a woman as a partner, not an opponent.
If you’re questioning, keep questioning. That’s not weakness. That’s you waking up.
